Child’s Play 3 (1991)

Directed by Jack Bender. Starring Justin Whalin, Perrey Reeves, Travis Fine, Jeremy Sylvers, Dean Jacobson, Andrew Robinson, Donna Eskra, Dakin Matthews, Peter Haskell, (voice) Brad Dourif. [R]

Eight years have passed and Andy (now played by Whalin), still troubled by his memories of Chucky, is shipped off to a military academy after getting bounced around for years in foster care. As for Chucky, some of his blood drips into a vat of molten plastic being used to create a new Good Guy doll, which means that this new doll is going to contain his vengeful soul (that is how it works, after all, as experts will attest). How that nasty li’l plaything is able to box, wrap, and ship himself to that school, however, is a tougher nut to crack… Inspiration is in short supply in this latest sequel; same goes for style and overall satisfaction, since it’s just more of the same. The shocks are tepid, the supporting cast nondescript, and all that rampant skepticism is wearing thin by now. Creativity is in such short supply, in fact, that no one bothers to make good use out of its change in setting—the climax even abruptly shifts to an amusement park (another location poorly used for its cheap thrill possibilities). Followed by Bride of Chucky.
