Bats (1999)

Directed by Louis Morneau. Starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Dina Meyer, Leon, Bob Gunton, Carlos Jacott, David McConnell, Oscar Rowland, Marcia Dangerfield. [PG-13]

When mad scientist Gunton is reasonably asked why he decided to genetically enhance bats that he brought over from Indonesia to a small Texas town, transforming them into mutated, ultra-aggressive predators, he replies with a completely straight face: “Because I’m a scientist…that’s what we do.” Yep, sure, that about sums it up. Dumb junk with only one real point of “interest”: its atrocious photography. To be fair, though, someone had to do something to try (and fail) to make all the rubber and CGI bat attacks look even remotely convincing. It’s telling that the lackluster heroes are up to their armpits in feces by the end.
