Don’t Think Twice (2016)

Directed by Mike Birbiglia. Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Mike Birbiglia, Chris Gethard, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, Maggie Kemper, Seth Barrish. [R]

Small but successful seriocomedy gem about a New York improv troupe that call themselves the Commune. Some members have greater success than others (Key even moves on to become a featured player on “Weekend Live,” which is just “Saturday Night Live” in every way but the name), and the way they respond and communicate with one another is both universally human and knowingly specific to these close-knit show-biz types (the sort that are both friends and rivals). Tidy at times, and not always plausible—by most accounts, people who buy tickets to see improv shows aren’t just interested in seeing the best-known player churn out stale routines—but overall, the pic is warm, moving, intelligent, and organically-performed by a solid cast. Fittingly, the improvisational bits alternate between the forced and the funny. Pete Holmes, Ben Stiller, and Lena Dunham all cameo as themselves.
