A Girl in Every Port (1952)

Directed by Chester Erskine. Starring Groucho Marx, William Bendix, Marie Wilson, Don DeFore, Gene Lockhart, Dee Hartford, Teddy Hart, Hanley Stafford.

One of Groucho’s “solo” ventures, pairing him with slow-witted sailor Bendix as they get embroiled in a racehorse swindle. Tired from the get-go; Wilson’s a blank-eyed dud as the resident ditzy blonde. Groucho gets a few amusing one-liners (“The story of my life—someone’s always in love with my girl, and she’s in love with him”), but not nearly enough to lead the way through this half-baked farce. No relation to the 1928 Howard Hawks silent picture with the same title; the short story that served as the basis for this one is “They Sell Sailors Elephants” by Frederick Hazlitt Brennan.
