Troll (1986)

Directed by John Carl Buechler. Starring Noah Hathaway, June Lockhart, Michael Moriarty, Shelley Hack, Phil Fondacaro, Jenny Beck, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gary Sandy, Sonny Bono, Brad Hall, Anne Lockhart. [PG-13]

A mean old troll possesses a little girl (Beck) and proceeds to wreak havoc in an apartment building, turning people into carpets of lush greenery that sprout more troll-like creatures. Bono is a grody sleaze, the mom from “Lassie” is a foul-mouthed witch, Louis-Dreyfus moves on from her tenure on “Saturday Night Live” by transforming into a wood nymph and trying to seduce her perplexed real-life boyfriend Hall, Atreyu from The Neverending Story (Hathaway) plays a kid named Harry Potter who needs a little magic to save the day, etc. Pathetic horror-fantasy is probably trying to be funny, but it’s only amusing in wrong ways, and not enough to make it worth watching. Has achieved some level of cult fascination, but then again, that cast almost demands it. “Followed” by the almost entirely unrelated Troll 2.
