Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996)

Directed by Mike Judge. Starring (voices) Mike Judge, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Robert Stack, Cloris Leachman, Eric Bogosian, Jacqueline Barba, Pamela Blair. [PG-13]

Mike Judge’s sub-moronic animated teenage duo makes the leap from MTV to the big screen. Their precious television set gets robbed, they head for Las Vegas to “score,” end up becoming the target of an FBI manhunt. Like it was with Bill & Ted and Wayne & Garth, the comedy operates on two levels—crude dopiness/vulgarity and sharp-eyed satire—but it hits the same notes too often to fully work end-to-end. Enough laughs and ingenuity to satisfy fans and newbies alike, but their antics do run thin without the benefit of the music video “commentary” interludes that broke up their shorts on TV. Willis and Moore went uncredited for their vocal contributions, as did Greg Kinnear and David Letterman (technically, the latter was billed, but under the name “Earl Hofert.”
