…And God Spoke (1993)

Directed by Arthur Borman. Starring Michael Riley, Stephen Rappaport, Ted Michaels, Michael Hitchcock, Damara Reilly, Soupy Sales, R. C. Bates, Christy Taylor, Andy Dick. [R]

Faux-documentary chronicling the production of a Hollywood Biblical epic, and how just about everything goes wrong. Strives to be the This Is Spinal Tap of moviemaking, but it’s too self-conscious, and overemphasizes the winks behind every joke (not helped by the sad fact that most of the gags are obvious). Characterizations are barely existent, with only the director (Riley) and producer (Rappaport) getting more than a few scenes, and they’re no more than ego-tripping caricatures. The subject of the movie-within-the-movie is also curious, considering that this is a contemporary-era comedy, but Biblical epics haven’t been in vogue for decades; it’s also difficult to credibly recreate a large-scale set in a low-budget film. Lou Ferrigno cameos as himself, playing Cain. Also known as The Making of ‘…And God Spoke’.
