Aftermath (2017)

Schwarzenegger’s family is killed in a plane crash caused by air traffic controller McNairy’s error. A couple decades ago, the star would have been pumping iron and gunning for retribution, a remorseless one-liner ready to go, but he’s pushing seventy here and only manages a glum expression and hollow heart, demanding an apology. Liberally inspired by real people and events, this dour drama is capable of expressing somber tragedy and empty grief, but then what? It’s one-note from start to finish, and the final scene is staged in a ridiculously phony fashion. Schwarzenegger’s brooding performance is more effective than the film surrounding it. He and Darren Aronofsky are among the producers.
