Home Sweet Hell (2015)

Directed by Anthony Burns. Starring Patrick Wilson, Katherine Heigl, Jordana Brewster, Jim Belushi, Chi McBride, A. J. Buckley, Kevin McKidd, Heath Freeman, Madison Wolfe, Aiden Flowers. [R]

Dreadfully obvious would-be black comedy showing the lengths that sociopathic suburban mom Heigl will go to in order to keep everything on track per her “book of goals” when her feckless husband (Wilson) gets swept up in infidelity and an extortion scheme. Every “joke” is painfully forced, every character is a stereotyped caricature, and the script, in addition to broadcasting a general disdain toward women throughout, never attempts any irony or commentary on the relentless yet predictable bad behavior. Heigl badly overplays neurotic perfectionism and Wilson flounders trying to get a handle on his inexplicable character—daring enough to carry on an illicit affair with salesgirl Brewster, but feebly anxious whenever half-confronted about it. To be irresponsibly glib about the whole thing, this home is hardly sweet, but it sure is hell.
