Monster Hunter (2020)

After her team gets wiped out, Army Ranger Captain Jovovich teams up with warrior Jaa to battle gigantic hostile creatures in an alternate universe (“the New World”). Based on a video game, and with even less plot/character development than is customary for its type; it’s hard to care about anything that happens because nothing of substance does happen. With about a half-hour to go, Perlman’s chieftain character delivers an exposition dump to help the uninitiated, but it’s too little, too late. Can’t even be enjoyed as a chunky smash-and-basher because this thing is so badly directed and chaotically edited that it’s impossible to know exactly what’s happening during any of the mindlessly frenetic action scenes. Lotsa noise, no wonder or excitement—yawn.
