Don’t Make Waves (1967)

Directed by Alexander Mackendrick. Starring Tony Curtis, Claudia Cardinale, Sharon Tate, Robert Webber, Joanna Barnes, David Draper, Edgar Bergen, Mort Sahl, Reg Lewis.

Flat sex comedy is a relic from the sixties, but doesn’t have much swing. Tourist Curtis stays over at Cardinale’s house after she destroys his car, bums around the wild beachfront scene, and pursues a skydiver named Malibu. Somewhat notable for being Sharon Tate’s big-screen “introducing” credit (third such role filmed, but first released), and she’s one of the more tolerable pieces of the superficial puzzle, despite basically being a walking Coppertone ad. Climactic mudslide showstopper isn’t a bust, but more energy is expended than generated (and it’s hard to care about who ends up with who when the slop clears), while the earlier skydiving sequence is undercut by tragic real-life circumstances: the accidental death of freefall cameraman Bob Buquor. Title tune by the Byrds.
