Security (2017)

Directed by Alain DesRochers. Starring Antonio Banderas, Liam McIntyre, Katherine Mary de la Rocha, Ben Kingsley, Chad Lindberg, Jiro Wang, Gabriella Wright, Cung Le, Shari Watson. [R]

Thin, predictable action programmer slots Banderas into aging action hero mode as a former Marine who takes a graveyard-shift job as a mall security guard. On his first night, he has to protect a young runaway murder witness who arrived moments before Kingsley and his team of mercenaries infiltrate the building. The action choreography is a little better than its B-movie roots would suggest, and Banderas’ grizzled voice suits the tough-guy-with-a-soft-heart cliché he essays, but the story and the trappings are far too routine to inspire much enthusiasm. The hero’s co-workers of varying degrees of helpfulness range between irritating and immemorable, so the quicker he’s left to become a one-man army, the better. Anyone hoping that the cramped, consumerist environment will lead to creativity in the action sequences will walk away disappointed—they could have been staged almost anywhere for the same results. Shot in Bulgaria.
