Blown Away (1994)

Directed by Stephen Hopkins. Starring Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Suzy Amis, Forest Whitaker, Lloyd Bridges, John Finn, Stephi Lineburg, Caitlin Clarke, Christofer de Oni. [R]

Mad bomber Jones, formerly of an IRA terrorist cell, travels to Boston and targets the members of a bomb squad unit employing an ex-crony (Jeff Bridges), before focusing his vendetta on that nemesis…wife, child and dog included. Lots of explosions, precious few brain cells; it’s silly but entertaining for a short period, then becomes increasingly stupid and contrived until you can’t believe a single thing that’s happening anymore. In an over-the-top performance to rival his Harvey Dent/Two-Face the following year, Jones’ character spends so much time building traps and bombs and unnecessarily complicated trap bombs, it’s no wonder his accent is so absurd; Jeff’s just seems to come and go at random, maybe because he’s too pleased to be working with dad Lloyd (playing his character’s uncle) to care. Co-written by Jay Roach, who’s credited here as M. Jay Roach (his real first name is Mathew). Cuba Gooding Jr. makes a brief unbilled appearance as a bomb squad trainee.
