He Ran All the Way (1951)
Directed by John Berry. Starring John Garfield, Shelley Winters, Wallace Ford, Selena Royle, Gladys George, Bobby Hyatt, Norman Lloyd.
Run-of-the-mill crime melodrama from a Dalton Trumbo script (assisted by future fellow blacklistee Hugo Butler). After a botched robbery, crook Garfield picks up nice girl Winters, escorts her back to her place, and takes her family hostage while eluding a manhunt. Pretty good performances, dramatically photographed by James Wong Howe, but no surprises, and it stretches procedural and psychological credibility thin. Garfield’s final film.
