The patriarch of a powerful New York family passes away, and a private message left for DA daughter Collins sends her to a secret bunker on the vast estate housing imprisoned Pegg. He claims to have been kept there for some three decades to cover up a crime; regardless of how much truth there is to his story, he’s clearly a nasty piece of work. Dubious thriller gets off to a crummy start—an opening salvo swiftly cut among among different locations/time periods like a movie trailer—and doesn’t improve much as the twisted narrative unwinds. Cold elegance frames a lot of talky two-handers, but it never takes hold. Cast-against-type Pegg offers novelty value, but not enough, and it’s hardly his best work anyway.
