Into the Blue (2005)

Directed by John Stockwell. Starring Paul Walker, Scott Caan, Jessica Alba, Ashley Scott, Josh Brolin, James Frain, Dwayne Adway, Tyson Beckford, Javon Frazer. [PG-13]

A quartet of tanned and toned young adults in the Bahamas are searching for a legendary shipwreck when they inadvertently run afoul of a drug kingpin and a ruthless scavenger searching for a major stash of cocaine lost in a downed airplane. A hollow thriller in a lovely locale that leaves little impression and offers negligible entertainment value. Not exactly unwatchable—the underwater photography is crisp and bright, and Jessica Alba spends much of the movie in a bikini—but it’s all so routine and predictable, story-wise, with banal dialogue at every turn; plus, while the four main actors spend a lot of time diving for treasure, their time would have been better spent trying to dig up some acting chops. Scott Caan seems to be on a mission to make his character even more obnoxious and unlikable than the one he played the last time he teamed up with Paul Walker (Varsity Blues). Followed by a direct-to-DVD sequel without any of the original cast.
