After the Sunset (2004)

Directed by Brett Ratner. Starring Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson, Salma Hayek, Naomie Harris, Don Cheadle, Troy Garity, Obba Babatundé. [PG-13]

Master thief Brosnan has retired to the Bahamas with girlfriend Hayek, but disgraced FBI agent Harrelson has followed them there, convinced the crook is actually there to swipe a priceless diamond aboard a cruise ship docked on the island. Slick heist picture no doubt aims to be a breezy, low-demand lark, but chemistry is thin, the caper is wimpy, and the comic relief more awkward than humorous. Local police officer Harris and gangster Cheadle eventually get involved, but each of their characterizations/subplots get meager payoffs. Sure, the Caribbean scenery is nice to look at, and the stars even nicer, but it’s all so obvious, and directed with Ratner’s trademark anonymous, bland professionalism. Features a handful of cameos from, among others, Chris Penn, Mykelti Williamson, and several L.A. Lakers players.
