Sliver (1993)

Directed by Philip Noyce. Starring Sharon Stone, William Baldwin, Tom Berenger, Colleen Camp, Polly Walker, Martin Landau, CCH Pounder, Amanda Foreman, Keene Curtis. [R]

Newly divorced and needing a change, book editor Stone moves into a sliver building plagued by strange and deadly occurrences. Could it be the work of a somewhat lecherous novelist (Berenger) or maybe the smoothly brooding techie (Baldwin) spying on all the building’s inhabitants? Ultimately, it doesn’t matter, since this movie is famous for switching the killer’s identity based on negative test screenings, making for a pretty worthless mystery. An erotic thriller without eroticism or thrills; pretends to delve into the world of voyeurism, but really just uses it as a plot device. Stone sleepwalks throughout, but it’s hard to blame her considering the material. Clumsily adapted from an Ira Levin novel by Joe Ezterhaus (red flag); produced by Robert Towne, but the days of Chinatown and Marathon Man were long behind him.
